Lydia Jazmine Expresses Disappointment Over UGX 1.4 Million UPRS Royalty Payout

Ugandan singer Lydia Jazmine has publicly stated her disappointment with the UGX 1.4 million she received from the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) as royalty payments. Jazmine, who has been active in the music industry for years, expressed that the sum does not reflect her extensive work and contributions.

“But that’s small money. You can’t tell me all those years I have worked for Shs 1.4m. I saw what others got, but I don’t know what’s wrong,” Jazmine remarked, indicating a feeling that the payout is significantly lower than anticipated.

Adding to the frustration, Jazmine mentioned that the payment was deposited into her mobile money account before she was properly informed or consulted about the distribution process. “I just said okay and accepted it. He called me when he had already deposited on mobile money,” she explained.

Her comments are the latest in an ongoing debate among Ugandan artists regarding the fairness and transparency of royalty collections and distributions. Fellow artists like Spice Diana have also reported receiving the same UGX 1.4 million, while others, such as Weasel Manizo, have received even less, around UGX 250,000.

Jazmine’s candid remarks are likely to fuel further calls for UPRS and related bodies to provide greater clarity and accountability in how royalties are managed and disbursed to artists. Musicians are increasingly demanding a system that more accurately reflects the value of their creative work.
