KCCA Faces Overwhelm from National Clean-Up Day Waste, Asks for Patience

Kampala’s sanitation efforts are facing a considerable backlog following the National Clean-Up Day event, which resulted in unexpectedly large volumes of garbage.

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has acknowledged the immense quantity of waste collected, much of which originated from households and businesses that had accumulated garbage over an extended period. Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki stated that while residents’ participation in bringing out stored waste was appreciated, it significantly exceeded KCCA’s projections.

Buzeki clarified that KCCA’s routine waste collection primarily focuses on public areas like markets and streets. The responsibility for managing waste generated within private homes and commercial establishments, she emphasized, lies with the property owners themselves.

KCCA teams are reportedly working around the clock to transport the collected waste to the Jjala Waste Management Site. However, the sheer volume has led to delays and increased turnaround times, causing long queues at the disposal facility. The authority is urging residents to bear with the situation as they are committed to clearing all the accumulated refuse.

Support from KCCA’s concessionaires, government agencies, and private contractors has been crucial in managing the increased workload, providing necessary trucks and logistical assistance.

Looking ahead, KCCA plans to hold the National Clean-Up Day monthly. Buzeki encouraged wider adoption of this initiative, framing it as a shared responsibility essential for improving public sanitation, safeguarding health, and fostering a cleaner urban environment. This move aligns with broader government strategies to enhance waste management and promote community involvement in maintaining cleanliness.
