SHANITA Delivers Hot Meals to Vulnerable Napak Residents Amidst Hunger Crisis

In response to the escalating hunger crisis in the Karamoja sub-region, the humanitarian organisation SHANITA has stepped in to provide vital food assistance to vulnerable residents in Napak District.

More than 300 people, including pregnant women, children, and the elderly, in Kawtakou Village received freshly cooked posho and beans. For many beneficiaries, this marked their first hot meal in weeks, as a prolonged drought has severely impacted food accessibility.

The intervention by SHANITA comes at a critical time when communities across Karamoja are grappling with widespread food shortages. Both government and other humanitarian agencies are intensifying emergency aid efforts to mitigate further suffering.

Lior Sperandeo, CEO of SHANITA, explained that while the organisation’s core mission in Karamoja is to support education through scholarships, the dire hunger situation necessitated an immediate response. “We could not fold our hands and watch people die of hunger,” Sperandeo stated, highlighting the decision to provide emergency food to the most at-risk community members.

SHANITA’s emergency response team directly prepared and distributed the meals, prioritizing children, expectant mothers, and the elderly.

This initiative complements the Ugandan government’s ongoing relief program, which targets approximately 314,000 households in the drought-stricken Karamoja region with staple foods like maize flour and beans.

Local community members expressed gratitude for the timely aid, noting the significant relief the hot meals provided to families who had been subsisting on minimal or no food for extended periods. “We are thankful to SHANITA for bringing food to our community,” remarked Jimmy Akobo, a local councillor for Kawtakou Village.

Humanitarian agencies continue to call for increased support, emphasizing the need for sustained interventions until the affected communities can recover from the drought and re-establish their food production capabilities.
