Sebei Zonal Industrial Hub Launches Modern Value Addition Facility

A new, state-of-the-art value addition facility has been established at the Sebei Zonal Industrial Hub in Kween District, marking a significant stride in boosting the region’s agro-processing capabilities. This initiative, spearheaded by President Museveni’s Presidential Industrial Hubs program, aims to transform locally grown cereals into value-added products, a move anticipated to enhance both domestic consumption and export potential.

The facility is equipped with modern machinery capable of processing up to 500 metric tonnes of produce, with the capacity to produce 10 tonnes daily. This significant investment is expected to drastically reduce post-harvest losses, a persistent challenge in Uganda’s agricultural sector, and combat issues like aflatoxin contamination, thereby improving the competitiveness of Ugandan grains on the international market.

Beyond cereal processing, the hub also features an animal feeds section. This addition is poised to reduce the reliance on imported animal feeds, a considerable expense for many Ugandan farmers, particularly those in neighboring countries like Kenya. The aim is to foster local production of quality animal feed, making it more accessible and affordable.

Officials highlighted the strategic importance of these industrial hubs in addressing national challenges, including food security. The facilities are envisioned to be capable of supplying food during crises, sourcing produce from local communities, processing it, and distributing it as needed. This strategy is being replicated across the country, with value addition capacity already established in four hubs and plans for eight more.

Local leaders have lauded the development, with some comparing it to major industrial revolutions that propelled developed nations forward. They emphasized the opportunity it provides for youth and community members through skills training and access to financial support, referencing Shs50 million in SACCO loans extended to hub graduates. Recent developments also include the appointment of a new Finance Officer to oversee SACCO operations and promote financial literacy in the Sebei sub-region.

This new facility represents a crucial step in Uganda’s broader agenda for economic industrialization, focusing on agro-processing, job creation, and enhancing productivity at the grassroots level. The initiative is already transforming lives through skills development and financial empowerment, setting a positive trajectory for the Sebei sub-region.
