NRM Warns Party Leaders Against Backing Independent Candidates in LC1 Elections

National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General Richard Todwong has declared a firm stance against party leaders who actively support independent candidates in the upcoming Local Council 1 (LC1) elections. Todwong announced that any elected official found undermining the party’s endorsed candidates will face disciplinary measures.

Speaking ahead of the July 28 LC1 polls, Todwong emphasized the NRM’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on indiscipline. He stated that the party expects unwavering support for its official flag bearers and will not condone any behavior that opposes this.

“This time, the party is very serious, and there will be sanctions against leaders who engage in such acts,” Todwong warned. His directive comes amidst reports of individuals claiming to be NRM flag bearers without official endorsement, and instances where party members losing primaries are backing independent candidates, particularly in Kampala and Wakiso.

Todwong clarified that all legitimate NRM candidates have been officially endorsed and their details submitted to the Electoral Commission. He urged supporters to verify the credentials of any purported NRM flag bearer.

While acknowledging that internal disputes might lead some members to sponsor rivals, Todwong stressed that such actions are unacceptable and detrimental to party unity and objectives. He revealed that some implicated leaders have already been asked to step aside pending investigations.

He called on NRM supporters nationwide to participate actively in the LC1 elections, highlighting their importance in strengthening governance and addressing poverty at the household level. Todwong expressed confidence in the party’s mobilization structures to ensure victory for its candidates, citing strong performance in recent Women’s Council elections as an indicator of the NRM’s enduring grassroots support.
