NRM Aims for Dominance in Ntungamo LC1 Elections

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) is making a significant push to consolidate its influence in Ntungamo District as the Local Council I (LC1) elections approach. Party officials have convened with sub-county and district leaders to strategize, aiming to transform Ntungamo into the NRM’s most robust bastion of support in the country.

This intensified effort follows extensive village-level consultations and aims for a near-total victory in the LC1 elections, building on the district’s strong performance in previous presidential polls. NRM leaders are particularly keen to surpass their second-place national ranking from the last presidential election.

According to party figures, a substantial portion of LC1 positions are expected to be filled unopposed by NRM candidates. The remaining seats will feature contests involving official NRM flag bearers, independents, and contestants from other parties. Internal reconciliation efforts have reportedly strengthened party unity, with several potential independent candidates opting to support the official NRM nominees.

The party’s confidence is further bolstered by the recent success in Women Council Committee elections, where NRM candidates secured approximately 90 percent of the positions. This outcome is seen as an indicator of sustained grassroots support, fueling the NRM’s target of winning up to 99 percent of the LC1 chairperson seats.

District leadership emphasized the critical role of LC1 chairpersons in government service delivery and urged party members to actively participate in voting for NRM flag bearers. Meanwhile, the District Electoral Commission has confirmed readiness to conduct the elections across all 1,033 villages, urging all stakeholders to maintain peace and adhere to electoral guidelines.

The NRM aims to leverage these grassroots elections to solidify its dominance in Ntungamo, reinforcing its position as a key supporter of the current government. Leaders are also seeking opportunities to engage directly with President Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni to further discuss party strategies and development plans for the district.
