National Cleaning Day Disrupts Travel, Banking, and Tourism

Saturday morning saw widespread interruptions across Uganda as the nation observed its first mandatory National Cleaning Day. The initiative, spearheaded by the Prime Minister’s office, led to temporary road closures and a halt in movement, impacting businesses, transport, and banking services.

Major highways were noticeably quiet by 7:00 am, with security forces enforcing movement restrictions. Passengers on long-distance buses faced unexpected delays, with some informed mid-journey that they could not proceed until the cleaning exercise concluded at 10:00 am. Transport operator Link Bus Services Ltd announced a “sanitation pause” for departures between 4:00 am and 6:00 am, with normal operations resuming later, though many travelers were unaware of the changes.

In urban areas, shops were instructed to close, and commercial banks delayed their openings, with some not opening until midday. Customers were advised to use digital banking services. The tourism sector also felt the pinch, with tour operators reporting delays that forced tourists to reschedule flights and travel plans. Several foreign visitors were seen stranded at checkpoints, unable to reach the airport.

Similar scenes were reported at border crossings, where queues of vehicles formed. While the National Cleaning Day was largely welcomed as a positive step for public health and sanitation, the initial rollout highlighted challenges in public sensitization and operational planning. Stakeholders are now calling for clearer guidelines and more effective communication to minimize disruptions for critical sectors in future events.
