Lyantonde Residents Arrested as Authorities Crack Down on Mandatory Clean-up

Authorities in Lyantonde District took a firm stance on Saturday, arresting numerous residents and seizing vehicles as part of a rigorous enforcement of the government’s mandatory ‘Bulungi Bwansi’ community sanitation initiative. The operation, which commenced early in the morning, saw traffic police establish roadblocks on key routes, stopping and inspecting vehicles and motorcycles.

Vehicles found operating without proper documentation were impounded and taken to the local police station. However, exceptions were made for those transporting patients to medical facilities, provided they could present proof.

Beyond traffic enforcement, district leaders actively conducted house-to-house inspections. Residents who were home but not participating in the clean-up faced questioning, with arrests made for those unable to provide satisfactory explanations for their absence. Homes whose occupants were found to be non-compliant were marked with the letter ‘A’ for ‘Absent,’ and owners were summoned to the Town Council offices.

Health facilities also came under scrutiny. The Resident District Commissioner issued warnings to some clinics regarding poor sanitation standards. One health worker was publicly reprimanded after their clinic was found to be operating in an unhygienic condition, with the owner ordered to appear before the RDC to address potential disciplinary action.

Concerns were also raised about the sanitation at Lyantonde Main Market. The RDC personally oversaw cleaning efforts, instructing traders and local leaders to address the waste issues. Lyantonde Town Council Mayor, Ali Bbongo Ddamulira, highlighted the district’s waste management challenges, primarily attributing them to the lack of a dedicated garbage collection truck.

Despite the enforcement measures, public participation remained notably low, with many homes remaining closed. The bulk of the cleaning work was ultimately carried out by police officers, government employees, and a limited number of voluntary participants. District leaders have announced another clean-up exercise for the following Friday, aiming to boost participation and improve sanitation in Lyantonde.
