Lira City Mandates Monthly Clean-Up Participation for Environmental Health

Lira City is stepping up efforts to ensure a cleaner environment by making participation in the monthly clean-up exercises a mandatory requirement for all residents and traders. This initiative is part of a national campaign aimed at enhancing sanitation and waste management across Uganda.

Mayor Sam Atul announced that the city has been implementing its own clean-up measures for the past month, following guidance from the central government. While the national launch occurred recently, Lira City was proactive in its preparations. Progress has been noted, particularly in Lira Main Market, where waste collection has seen improvements.

However, a significant challenge remains the city’s overwhelmed dumping site. To mitigate this, authorities are emphasizing waste sorting at the source, encouraging households and businesses to separate recyclable materials. Mayor Atul also called for the central government to expedite the approval of a pending sanitation ordinance. This ordinance, he explained, will provide stronger legal backing to enforce sanitation regulations and hold individuals accountable for waste disposal.

The city is also requesting more public health officers to bolster waste management efforts through continuous public awareness and regular inspections.

Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole expressed frustration with residents who shirk responsibility for clean-up activities, leaving it to government officials and security personnel. He declared that the monthly clean-up, held on the last Saturday of each month, will no longer be a voluntary exercise. Traders who fail to participate or maintain clean premises may face consequences, including potential closure of market operations until the environment is satisfactory.

These measures underscore the government’s commitment to improving public health, urban sanitation, and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among citizens. The success of Lira City’s initiative hinges on robust community engagement and strict enforcement of sanitation rules.
