Bukomansimbi Police Force Residents into Community Cleanup

In a decisive move to enforce environmental cleanliness, police in Bukomansimbi District compelled residents to participate in the nationwide “Bulungi Bwansi” community clean-up exercise on Saturday. Officers, under the direction of District Police Commander Aggrey Francis Kyesimiire, conducted house-to-house visits, ensuring all residents were involved in the sanitation campaign.

Many residents had attempted to avoid the exercise by staying indoors or seeking refuge in local lodges. However, police intervention, including storming premises like Gwe Osalawo Lodge, ensured no one was exempt. Roadblocks were also set up on major routes, with motorists and passengers required to join the cleanup before continuing their travel, causing temporary traffic disruptions.

The “Bulungi Bwansi” initiative, aimed at promoting public health and preventing disease outbreaks through environmental hygiene, began early in the morning. Commander Kyesimiire stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and urged citizens to take government programs seriously.

“No one is above this exercise. Every resident has a duty to keep their environment clean because a clean community protects us from disease,” Kyesimiire stated. Some residents welcomed the stringent enforcement, noting it increased participation compared to previous, less supervised campaigns.

Local authorities are also cracking down on businesses lacking adequate sanitation facilities, such as pit latrines. Assistant Resident District Commissioner Joseph Luwagga Kitayimbwa warned that non-compliant business owners would face legal consequences. The Bukomansimbi Town Council Mayor encouraged a shift towards making cleanliness a daily habit rather than an occasional event.

District officials have warned that individuals found maintaining dirty premises after the exercise will be arrested and prosecuted, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving public health through sanitation. The campaign aims to curb the spread of preventable diseases like cholera, typhoid, and malaria.
