Museveni Honors General Moses Ali as a Freedom Fighter and Peacemaker

President Yoweri Museveni has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late General (Rtd) Moses Ali, recognizing him as a pivotal figure in Uganda’s history.
Speaking at a special parliamentary session convened to honor the late legislator, Museveni described Ali as a patriot, freedom fighter, and peacemaker whose impact on national stability and the development of the West Nile sub-region is indelible.
“I was able to hear and see three elements of his contribution to Uganda: he was a lover of freedom, peacemaker, a development person,” President Museveni stated, recalling his decades of experience with Ali.
Museveni noted that while Ali served under former President Idi Amin, he privately opposed the regime’s violent excesses. This dissent, the President suggested, ultimately led to Ali’s distancing from Amin’s government, demonstrating his strong commitment to justice and freedom over political positions.
The President recounted his own journey, identifying himself as the first Ugandan to openly challenge Idi Amin’s regime after the 1971 coup. He highlighted his personal meeting with Moses Ali in Libya in 1981, organized by Muammar Gaddafi, where Ugandan liberation groups convened.
During this period, Museveni observed Ali’s inclination towards cooperation and dialogue. This cooperative spirit was further evident in 1985-86 when Ali and his UNRF forces strategically withdrew, avoiding conflict as the NRA advanced on Kampala, marking a crucial moment in their eventual cooperation.
Beyond military and political contributions, Museveni emphasized Gen. Ali’s dedication to the West Nile region’s progress. He remembered Ali as a persistent advocate for infrastructure development, including roads and electricity, veteran compensation, and increased government investment, many of which have since been realized.
General Moses Ali served Uganda for nearly sixty years in various military and civilian capacities, including ministerial roles and as First Deputy Prime Minister. He was also a long-serving Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County, known for his deep experience and advocacy for peace and development.
