Kabalagala Police Bust Phone Theft Ring, Recover 11 Devices

Authorities in Kabalagala Division have successfully recovered eleven mobile phones suspected of being stolen as part of an ongoing effort to combat illegal phone trade. The operation, conducted in Kansanga Parish, Makindye Division, stemmed from intelligence indicating a trade in stolen devices between Kampala City Centre and Kansanga.

During the operation on the night of July 23, 2026, officers discovered the phones concealed in foil paper, a method often used to disrupt signal tracking and hinder recovery efforts. The seized devices comprise eight iPhones, two Samsung phones, and one Itel handset.

One individual, identified as Mariam Nakitende, was arrested and is facing charges related to the possession of suspected stolen property. Another suspect managed to evade capture and is currently being sought by the police. Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire urged the public to report to Kabalagala Police Division with proof of ownership if they believe their stolen phones are among those recovered.

Investigations are actively underway to determine the origin of the recovered devices and to identify their legitimate owners. The police have vowed to continue such operations to dismantle criminal networks involved in phone theft and illicit resale. Further measures include profiling offenders, increasing police presence in known crime hotspots like Arena, Muyenga, and Tank Hill Road, and enhancing community engagement through sensitization programs.
