Journalist Gideon Tugume Released After Two Weeks in Detention

Journalist and lawyer Gideon Tugume has regained his freedom after nearly two weeks in detention. His release brings an end to days of intense uncertainty regarding his whereabouts following his arrest earlier this month.

Tugume’s disappearance had sparked widespread concern among his colleagues, legal professionals, and human rights advocates, who had actively called for authorities to disclose his location.

The situation gained public attention after journalist Stanley Ndawula published an open letter to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. In the letter, Ndawula acknowledged that Tugume’s remarks had been inappropriate and appealed for mercy, requesting that Tugume be allowed to return to his family.

Tugume was arrested at his home in Gayaza, Wakiso District, on July 6 by unidentified armed men. The arrest was reportedly linked to comments made on Radio 4, where he questioned the parentage of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and suggested a DNA test. These remarks quickly circulated on social media, drawing sharp criticism.

For the duration of his detention, neither Tugume’s family nor his legal team knew his exact whereabouts, leading to calls for security agencies to provide an account. Following his release, Tugume appeared on Radio 4 to publicly apologize to Gen. Muhoozi for his statements.

His release has concluded the period of anxious public speculation, though questions surrounding the specifics of his detention and subsequent release persist.
