Gen. Moses Ali Honored by Parliament for Peace, Leadership, and Nation Building

Parliament convened a special sitting to honor the legacy of General (Rtd.) Moses Ali, a figure described by lawmakers as a statesman, freedom fighter, and peacemaker. Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth highlighted Ali’s unwavering commitment to public service across changing political landscapes, noting his resilience and sacrifice.

“When an elder dies, a library burns,” Oboth remarked, emphasizing the loss of Ali’s historical knowledge and wisdom. He urged future generations to draw inspiration from Ali’s perseverance and dedication to duty.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja commended Ali’s military endeavors, particularly his role in bringing peace to the West Nile region through the Uganda National Rescue Front and subsequent peace accords. She also credited him with spearheading efforts to end the LRA insurgency and championing the Amnesty Act.

Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, recognized Ali as a pivotal figure in Uganda’s history, mentoring subsequent generations of leaders. He called for emulation of Ali’s selfless leadership and accountable governance.

Vice President Jessica Alupo praised Ali’s commitment to education, especially for young Muslim girls, and noted his involvement in founding West Nile University. Lieutenant General James Mugira added that Ali’s strategic input was crucial in stabilizing the West Nile region and improving security.

Rebecca Kadaga, First Deputy Prime Minister, used the occasion to advocate for the compensation of the Nubian community, referencing Ali’s book on their history. Legislators acknowledged Ali’s extensive career, holding various ministerial portfolios and serving as MP for Adjumani West County from 1994 to 2016.

Gen. Moses Ali will be laid to rest in his ancestral home in Adjumani District.
