Bishop Urges MPs to Champion Truth and Integrity

Members of Parliament and government officials received a strong exhortation to uphold truth and integrity in their public duties. Bishop Constantine Rupiny of the Nebbi Catholic Diocese delivered this message during a special High Mass held at Parliament.

The Mass, observed on Thursday, 16th July 2026, marked the feast day of St. Thomas More and St. Mukasa Balikuddembe, revered as the patron saints of statesmen and stateswomen.

Drawing inspiration from scripture and the lives of these saints, Bishop Rupiny implored leaders to stand firm in their commitment to truth, even when faced with pressures or temptations. He highlighted the Alur concept of ‘Aja,’ emphasizing its significance in promoting truth-telling.

“Truth and living in truth can be compromised by ‘ringu’ [beef], good living, money and power. These can easily make us abandon Aja, the path of truth,” Bishop Rupiny stated, urging the legislators to emulate the integrity demonstrated by Saints More and Balikuddembe.

He further encouraged the lawmakers of the 12th Parliament to make truth their constant guide and to embrace generosity in their service to the nation. “It is better for one to have little than to accumulate everything for themselves,” he advised.

The Bishop also recognized the crucial role religious leaders play in fostering national peace and encouraged continued collaboration between religious communities and legislators.
