Oil Prices Surge Past $100 a Barrel Amidst Middle East Tensions

Global oil prices have breached the $100 per barrel mark for the first time since May, driven by escalating conflict in the Middle East and attacks on key shipping routes. Source: https://nilepost.co.ug/news/358777/oil-prices-hit-100-for-the-first-time-since-may

Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil prices, experienced a significant jump of over 6% on Thursday, marking the first time it has surpassed $100 a barrel since May. This surge follows several days of increasing prices, a trend exacerbated by stepped-up US military strikes against Iran and recent attacks by Houthi militia in Yemen on oil tankers in the Red Sea.

These attacks pose a threat to crucial export routes, including one utilized by Saudi Arabia to circumvent the Strait of Hormuz. The instability has reignited fears about the security of global energy supplies. Prior to these developments, oil prices had been on a downward trend, partly due to a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran.

However, with the ceasefire failing and geopolitical tensions rising, the cost of fuel is expected to climb. This has a ripple effect across economies. In the UK, petrol prices have risen by 5p per litre in July, reaching approximately £1.56, while diesel averages £1.72 per litre. In the US, average gasoline prices have now exceeded $4 a gallon.

The rise in energy costs is likely to contribute to inflation, impacting consumers through higher prices for everyday goods, including food, as businesses pass on increased transportation expenses. This presents a challenge for central banks, which may face pressure to maintain or even increase interest rates to combat potential inflationary pressures, a move that could affect mortgage holders and borrowers.
