Luweero Muslim Council Welcomes New Chairman, Approves Budget Amidst Land Concerns

The Luweero Muslim District Council has a new chairman, Hajji Muhammad Matovu, who was unanimously elected to the position. His predecessor, Ali Ndawula, was reportedly impeached due to allegations of misconduct and misrepresenting the district. Matovu was immediately sworn in and pledged to foster unity, transparency, and accountability within the council, aligning his leadership with the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Constitution.
During the same meeting, a budget totaling Shs264 million was approved for the 2026/2027 financial year. This funding is earmarked to support the district’s operational activities and various development initiatives. The District Treasurer, Gadafi Abdu Bachou, emphasized the importance of robust resource mobilization to ensure these programs reach successful implementation.
A pressing issue raised during the session was the alleged encroachment and illegal sale of Muslim land. Luweero District Kadhi Sheikh Hajji Mulindwa Ramadhan Swaib Nsanja highlighted concerns regarding a 7.5-acre plot at Nalweweta, believed to be UMSC property, which is reportedly occupied by members associated with the Kibuli faction. He indicated that the land was purportedly sold under the guise of processing land titles.
To address these land concerns, the Kadhi called for the prompt registration and titling of all Muslim properties across the district. He also directed County Sheikhs to fill existing leadership vacancies and to intensify efforts in mobilizing Muslims for community programs through Zakat and voluntary Sadaqah contributions.
Further decisions included the establishment of sectoral committees to enhance oversight and accountability in program implementation and resource utilization. A progress report also indicated that renovations at the Luweero Muslim District Headquarters Mosque and the construction of an ablution facility, valued at Shs150 million, are progressing well and are currently at the roofing stage.
