ITMS Boosts Police Vehicle Recovery Rate in Uganda

The Uganda Police Force achieved a notable success in June, recovering 46 stolen vehicles and motorcycles, largely attributed to the expanded use of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS). This system plays a crucial role in tracking down stolen vehicles and verifying ownership, according to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.
The ITMS Monitoring Centre reported that 46 out of 52 reported vehicle theft cases were resolved, marking an impressive 88% recovery rate for the month. This success highlights the growing effectiveness of the ITMS in law enforcement operations.
In addition to theft cases, the ITMS centre managed 145 vehicle and motorcycle-related incidents in June, a substantial increase from 74 cases in May. This surge is linked to improved communication channels between police stations and the ITMS centre, facilitated by dedicated hotline phones.
An ITMS official noted that the increase in reported incidents signifies greater utilization of the system by police officers nationwide. Enhanced coordination and communication are strengthening the police’s capacity to recover stolen vehicles and motorcycles.
Further bolstering these efforts, collaboration with units such as the Police Multimedia Unit, video analysis teams, and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) expedites vehicle record verification and coordinated field responses.
Separately, Kampala Metropolitan Police recovered one suspected stolen motor vehicle, one suspected stolen motorcycle, and 15 motorcycles believed to have been concealed for sale, with investigations and arrests ongoing. The public is encouraged to report to Wakiso Police Station with proof of ownership to claim any recovered motorcycles.
Uganda’s ongoing rollout of the ITMS, integrating digital number plates with real-time monitoring, aims to combat vehicle theft and enhance road security across the country.
