Trump Warns of Retaliation: Iran's Infrastructure Targeted if Ships Attacked

In a significant escalation of rhetoric, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that any attack on ships in the Strait of Hormuz would be met with severe retaliation. Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the U.S. would respond by destroying Iranian infrastructure, specifically mentioning bridges and power plants. He indicated that these targets could be located in or near the capital, Tehran.

This threat comes in the wake of ongoing military actions in the region. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) has been conducting strikes against Iranian military sites for eleven consecutive nights, aiming to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping. Iran, meanwhile, has warned against any U.S. actions targeting its nuclear facilities.

Reports from Iranian state media indicated air defenses were activated in Tehran, with explosions also reported in several other cities, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, and Bushehr, the latter being home to Iran’s sole nuclear power plant. Centcom detailed that their strikes targeted Iranian operational centers, maritime capabilities, aircraft hangars, drone storage, and logistics infrastructure, citing over 30 attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz in the past three months.

The conflict also involves regional actors, with Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen reportedly threatening to blockade Saudi ports. This has already caused disruption to oil tanker routes in the Red Sea, adding to global fuel price volatility. Despite the heightened tensions and the cost to the U.S. military, which has reached $37.5 billion, Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated a willingness for diplomacy, though he doubted Iran’s sincerity.

President Trump also referenced potential strikes on an underground nuclear site near Natanz, an area suspected of housing an undeclared enrichment facility. Iran’s military command has characterized such an attack as an “expansion of war,” vowing to strike U.S. interests and those of its allies in response. The volatile situation continues to impact global markets and maritime security.
