St. Mary's Assumpta Girls Honour Legacy of Gen. Moses Ali

In Adjumani, students and educators at St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls Secondary School took time from their studies to pay a heartfelt tribute to the late General (Rtd.) Moses Ali. As the only girls’ secondary school in the Ma’di Sub-region, the institution, with its 712 students, chose to honor the former Second Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West MP, whose burial was scheduled for the following day.

The school lowered its flags to half-mast, and a solemn gathering took place, featuring prayers and patriotic songs. This memorial underscored the deep respect held for General Ali, who was widely credited for his steadfast support for the school’s expansion and for his advocacy for girl-child education.

Sister Rebecca Abiyo, the headteacher, led the brief ceremony, emphasizing General Ali’s profound impact beyond his political career. She remarked on his legacy of compassion and his dedication to the community.

“The legacy he has left behind is great. He loved people beyond being his close relatives,” stated Sr. Abiyo. She highlighted the school’s growth from a small beginning to its current enrollment of 712 girls, including Ugandan students and refugees from neighboring countries such as Ethiopia, who travel significant distances to access education.

Students echoed these sentiments. Norah Abio, a Senior Two student, pledged to uphold General Ali’s legacy, describing him as a father figure who championed education for girls in the Ma’di Sub-region. Brenda Mazapkwe, a Senior Three student, added that General Ali would also be remembered for his role in fostering peace and stability in Uganda, a factor that has enabled the country to host refugees.

Judith Muya Julise, a South Sudanese refugee and Senior Six student, shared that General Ali advocated for peaceful coexistence and the support of refugees in the West Nile region, making refugees feel respected and valued. The tribute concluded with students affirming that General Ali’s influence extended to championing educational access for marginalized and disadvantaged girls throughout the region, aligning with the school’s mission to provide scholarships and quality education.

This tribute coincided with the arrival of General Moses Ali’s body in Adjumani and preparations for his final resting place, marking the end of a distinguished career in public service.
