Mpigi NRM Chair Warns Against Electing Land Grabbers to LC1 Leadership

Sulayiman Kaweesi, the NRM Chairperson for Mpigi District, is urging residents to exercise caution in the upcoming LC1 chairperson and women’s committee elections. He delivered a strong warning that electing individuals with questionable integrity could worsen the pervasive issue of land grabbing and fuel local disputes.

During a mobilization meeting in Kituntu Sub-county, Kaweesi expressed concern that some candidates are allegedly being backed by land grabbers and money lenders. These sponsors, he stated, are using financial influence to secure village offices with the aim of advancing their own interests, often at the expense of vulnerable residents.

Kaweesi implored voters not to be swayed by monetary offers or intimidation, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing character and commitment to community service over wealth. “Vote for someone you know well, someone with good character and the ability to protect your community,” he advised, stressing the need for leaders who will safeguard peace and defend the people’s interests.

Mawokota South MP Suzan Nakawuki echoed these concerns, noting that Mpigi’s rapid development has attracted investors, some of whom allegedly employ unscrupulous methods to acquire land. She highlighted that LC1 chairpersons, despite their seemingly minor roles, serve as the crucial first line of defense against land grabbing and are instrumental in mediating land disputes.

Both leaders appealed to the electorate to reject intimidation and violence, advocating for the selection of leaders who will foster peace, justice, and community development. Uganda is scheduled to hold these crucial local elections on July 28th.
