Mathias Walukagga, known for his Kadongo Kamu music and former role as Mayor of Kyengera Municipality, has publicly backed the anti-corruption drive initiated by Minister for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara.
Walukagga stated that the campaign is a timely and essential undertaking for Uganda’s local governments. He defended Barugahara’s methods, noting that he himself prioritized similar actions, particularly against land grabbing, during his mayoral term.
“I support Balaam and believe this could be one way of saving taxpayers’ money. I personally made it very difficult for people to grab land until I left office,” Walukagga explained.
He further asserted that the transparency brought about by recording and sharing inspection tours on social media is crucial for holding local leaders accountable. Walukagga believes that public scrutiny is a potent deterrent against corrupt practices.
“I don’t condone corruption, and what he is doing is right. Taxpayers’ money should be used for its intended purpose. If you don’t want to be exposed, then don’t engage in corruption,” he concluded.
Minister Barugahara has been actively visiting various districts as part of his initiative to combat corruption and enhance accountability within local government structures.
