Ssenyonyi Honors Moses Ali, Calls for Constitutional Adherence in Parliament

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has eulogized the late General Moses Ali, recognizing him as a dedicated public servant despite their differing political affiliations with the National Unity Platform (NUP) and the NRM.

Speaking at a special parliamentary sitting to honor the former Second Deputy Prime Minister, Ssenyonyi acknowledged Ali’s decades of service, even while admitting to disagreements on Ali’s decision to continue seeking office at an advanced age and despite health concerns.

“I didn’t even agree with the idea of him running for office again, yet he was unwell and needed to take a break. But I still give him his flowers for the service that he rendered this nation over the years,” Ssenyonyi stated, emphasizing that political roles are temporary.

Ssenyonyi urged leaders to be diligent, respect the rule of law, and focus on leaving a positive legacy by strengthening institutions. He particularly appealed to President Yoweri Museveni, who was present, to ensure security agencies operate strictly within the constitutional framework.

“I would like to ask him to prevail over the various security entities to observe the law and respect the law as they do their work,” Ssenyonyi pleaded. He highlighted the constitutional provisions for arrest and detention, including the 48-hour limit for court appearances, and expressed concern over alleged unlawful detentions and abductions.

“Lately, people are abducted, taken for days, weeks and even months. Sometimes they are tortured. The family does not know their whereabouts and they are not produced in court. This is not right and we must collectively condemn it,” he added.

Ssenyonyi also pointed to Ali’s integration of his forces into the national army as a sign of his commitment to national unity. He concluded by extending condolences to Ali’s family and various communities mourning the loss of the long-serving politician.

This tribute was delivered during a session commemorating Gen. Moses Ali, a prominent figure who held numerous senior government positions throughout his extensive political career. His passing has prompted acknowledgments from across Uganda’s political spectrum.
