Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has paid tribute to the late former First Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali, acknowledging his decades of public service. Ssenyonyi stated that despite political disagreements between their respective parties, the National Unity Platform (NUP) and the National Resistance Movement (NRM), his respect for Gen. Ali’s contributions to Uganda remained unwavering.
Speaking at a special parliamentary sitting honoring Gen. Ali, Ssenyonyi highlighted that the late general dedicated over fifty years to serving Uganda in various capacities, including as a soldier, Member of Parliament, and Cabinet minister. He specifically mentioned disagreeing with Gen. Ali’s political aspirations when he was unwell but emphasized giving credit where it was due for his service.
“Public service is one of the noblest callings demanding sacrifice, resilience and commitment,” Ssenyonyi told the House. He added that Gen. Ali’s long journey through Uganda’s history, encompassing conflict, transition, and nation-building, provided valuable institutional memory for younger leaders.
On behalf of the opposition, Ssenyonyi extended condolences to Gen. Ali’s family, the people of Adjumani, the Muslim community, the Nubian community, and all Ugandans mourning the loss. President Yoweri Museveni also paid tribute, describing Gen. Ali as a dedicated soldier, political figure, and exemplary farmer whose contributions to national development would be missed.
Gen. Moses Ali, who passed away at the age of 87, had a distinguished career that spanned military service, extensive political roles, and a notable career in modern agriculture. His life and service were celebrated for their dedication to Uganda.
