Pearl of Africa Hygiene Limited has officially begun manufacturing disposable baby diapers under the brand name “Tiny Hugs” within the MMP Buikwe Industrial Park. Launched in June 2026, the company aims to produce what its Managing Director, Kaxak Dobariya, describes as “Africa’s softest diapers,” utilizing medical-grade materials for enhanced softness and absorption.
The new facility, spanning 9,000 square meters, has the capacity to produce 500,000 diapers daily in four different sizes. Currently, the factory employs 50 individuals, providing local employment opportunities in roles ranging from machine operation to quality supervision and lab assistance.
Uganda was chosen as the production base due to its young, growing population, which signifies strong demand for baby care products. Dobariya also highlighted Uganda’s strategic location in East Africa for access to regional markets, the government’s commitment to industrialization, and the potential to substitute imported diapers with locally manufactured goods.
Despite facing initial challenges such as capital requirements, certification processes, reliance on imported raw materials, and infrastructure limitations, Pearl of Africa Hygiene Limited implemented strategies to overcome these hurdles. These included a phased investment approach, forging partnerships with suppliers, and collaborating with the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to streamline bureaucratic processes and ensure compliance.
Looking ahead, the company plans to focus on enhancing product quality, improving manufacturing efficiency, and expanding its distribution network across East Africa. Future plans also include diversifying their product line with items like wipes and incontinence products, exploring local material sourcing, and adopting sustainable packaging solutions.
The Uganda Investment Authority provided significant support throughout the setup process, from initial information gathering to obtaining necessary licenses and coordinating with agencies like the Uganda National Bureau of Standards.
