Parliament convened a special session to honor the life and contributions of the late Gen. Moses Ali, former Second Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West MP. Lawmakers lauded him as a steadfast nationalist, a dedicated mentor, and a statesman whose decades of service significantly shaped Uganda’s journey towards peace and robust governance.
Affectionately known as the “Cock of West Nile,” Gen. Ali was remembered by members of both the ruling NRM and the Opposition for his enduring commitment to public service. His casket lay in state in the parliamentary foyer before the proceedings commenced, drawing reflections from seasoned politicians and rising leaders alike.
Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth highlighted President Museveni’s trust in Gen. Ali, evidenced by his appointment to numerous critical government roles. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja moved a motion to formally honor the late general, characterizing him as a leader of “exceptional character” who served the nation with “distinction, resilience, transparency, accountability, courage, and commitment.”
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi echoed these sentiments, urging fellow leaders to draw inspiration from Gen. Ali’s dedication and to uphold the rule of law and integrity in public service. Vice President Jessica Alupo further lauded Gen. Ali as a disciplined military officer and a nurturing mentor who guided many young leaders, leaving an “indelible mark on Uganda’s history.”
Other prominent figures, including First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, also paid tribute, underscoring his role as a champion for peace and his unwavering dedication to the development of the West Nile region. Gen. Moses Ali is scheduled to be laid to rest in Adjumani District.
