The Karamoja Sub-region is set to receive much-needed emergency relief food, as announced by Minister for Karamoja Affairs, John Baptist Lokii. Following a rapid assessment to gauge the extent of food insecurity caused by prolonged drought, the government has confirmed that supplies are now available for all residents.
Minister Lokii stated that a distribution matrix will be employed to ensure that aid reaches the most vulnerable households. He stressed the importance of timely and responsible delivery to all distribution centers, urging against any misuse of the provisions.
To oversee the process, Lokii has directed Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), and security agencies to provide regular updates and conduct close monitoring. He emphasized a team approach for coordination and routine oversight.
Community mobilization and sensitization are also key components of the plan, with beneficiaries advised to use the relief food responsibly. The Minister issued a stern warning, indicating that legal action would be taken against anyone found diverting or misappropriating the food supplies.
Adding to the positive outlook, Minister Lokii commended security agencies for their role in restoring peace to Karamoja, noting that the prevailing stability is crucial for the success of the relief program.
The National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) has been contracted to deliver approximately 9.4 million kilograms of relief food, consisting of maize flour and beans, across the nine districts of Karamoja. Security forces, including the UPDF and Uganda Police, will provide transport, security, and escorts to ensure the supplies reach even remote areas. The distribution exercise is slated to commence upon finalization of beneficiary lists and logistical arrangements. Similar coordination meetings are planned across all districts to ensure a uniform and effective implementation.
