Bugisu Cultural Leadership Dispute Resolved Through Court-Mediated Settlement

After years of internal conflict and legal battles, a significant leadership dispute within the Bugisu cultural institution, Inzu Ya Masaba, has reached a resolution. Rival factions have agreed to a court-mediated settlement, signaling an end to eight pending civil suits challenging the leadership of Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma.

The breakthrough was achieved during intensive two-day mediation sessions held at the High Court in Mbale, facilitated by a distinguished panel including Deputy Chief Justice Emeritus Richard Butera, Solicitor General Emeritus Francis Atoke, Uganda Law Society President Emeritus Francis Gimara, and Prof. Andrew Khaukha.

The agreement, once formally adopted by the court as a consent judgment, will be legally binding on all parties. Key terms of the settlement include the recognition of Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma as the cultural leader, with his current term set to conclude on July 25, 2028.

Crucially, the pact reinstates the traditional five-year rotational leadership system among the three founding clans: Wanale, Mubuya, and Mwambu. Following Mudoma’s term, leadership is slated to rotate to the Wanale clan, aligning with the restored constitutional framework. The 2011 Constitution of Inzu Ya Masaba has also been reinstated and will undergo a future consultative review.

As part of the resolution, all related court cases will be withdrawn, with each party responsible for their legal costs. This landmark agreement is being hailed as a major success for Alternative Dispute Resolution, providing a foundation for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence within the Bugisu community.
