Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali during a special parliamentary sitting, remembering him as an exemplary patriot, soldier, and statesman. Gen. Ali, who passed away at Nakasero Hospital at the age of 87, dedicated over five decades of his life to Uganda’s public service, significantly contributing to national peace and development.
Babalanda highlighted Gen. Ali’s unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and national progress. She noted his long tenure representing the people of West Nile in Parliament, serving as the Member of Parliament for East Moyo County and later Adjumani West County, with his repeated electoral victories underscoring the trust constituents placed in his leadership.
His contributions extended beyond parliamentary duties. Babalanda emphasized Gen. Ali’s pivotal role in fostering national reconciliation, particularly his decision to abandon rebellion and join the National Resistance Movement (NRM). This pivotal choice, she stated, was instrumental in restoring peace to the West Nile region and strengthening national unity.
The late General’s influence was felt across various sectors. He held significant ministerial positions under the Idi Amin administration and later became a close ally of President Museveni after the 1988 peace accord integrated his fighters into the national army. Gen. Ali also pursued agricultural ventures, earning recognition as a leading farmer, and documented the history of the Nubian community in his book, ‘The Odyssey of the Nubi.’
Babalanda extended condolences to President Museveni, the First Family, Gen. Ali’s family, and the people of West Nile, urging Ugandans to emulate the values of peace and service that defined his life. The nation mourns a dedicated public servant whose legacy includes significant advancements in peace, reconciliation, and community development.
