UPC Caucus Stands Firmly Behind President Akena, Dismisses PLU Interference

Legislators from the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) Parliamentary Caucus have publicly denounced the Patriotic League of Uganda’s (PLU) reported efforts to replace Jimmy Akena as the party’s president. The caucus described the move as an illegal and unconstitutional interference in the internal affairs of the UPC.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament, UPC MPs asserted that leadership decisions within the party are solely the prerogative of UPC members. They emphasized that no external pressure group possesses the authority to impose a leader upon the party.

The caucus also expressed shock and disbelief regarding the individual allegedly being put forward by the PLU to replace Akena. They stated that as elected representatives of the UPC, they have no knowledge of this purported new leader, calling the entire initiative a “collapsed move” that they reject entirely.

The press briefing was led by the UPC Parliamentary Caucus Whip, Dr. Eunice Otuko Apio, and included other notable MPs such as Geoffrey Ocen, Kenny Auma, Peter Obong, and Janet Auma. They reaffirmed their confidence in Jimmy Akena, recognizing him as the legitimate and current president of the UPC.

In a formal statement, the caucus highlighted Akena’s leadership, commitment, and support provided to party structures and candidates during recent elections. Dr. Apio stressed that the UPC Parliamentary Caucus distances itself from any statements made by PLU officials concerning UPC’s leadership.

Concluding their remarks, the caucus urged UPC members and supporters to remain calm, united, and vigilant against any attempts to destabilize the party, particularly in anticipation of future political engagements.
