Uganda losing billions to road crashes, advocates urge action

Uganda is facing a staggering annual economic loss of over Shs7 trillion due to road traffic crashes, according to road safety advocates. This immense cost encompasses medical expenses, emergency services, and lost productivity, with millions also spent annually on treating crash victims.

Advocates emphasize that the majority of these accidents are preventable, with reckless driving identified as a primary culprit. Factors like speeding, driver fatigue, distracted driving, and poor vehicle maintenance contribute significantly to the tragic toll.

The recent tragic school bus accident in Kapchorwa, which resulted in numerous fatalities, has been cited as a stark reminder of the dire need for improved road safety management. Experts estimate that road crashes claim an average of 15 lives daily in Uganda, a figure potentially higher due to underreporting.

Calls are being made for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and continuous public awareness campaigns to foster a culture of safety. Behavior change is considered the ultimate solution, with citizens urged to hold drivers and vehicle owners accountable.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the hiring practices for drivers, particularly for school transportation. One advocacy group alleged that the driver in the Kapchorwa incident was hired on short notice and may have lacked familiarity with the vehicle, underscoring the need for thorough vetting of driver qualifications and experience by institutions like schools.

There’s a consensus that road safety should be treated as a national public health emergency, requiring strengthened implementation of existing safety measures and a collective responsibility from all road users to report dangerous driving practices.
