Tragedy struck in Mabuka village, Bukana sub-county, Namayingo district, when an abandoned gold mine collapsed, resulting in the deaths of three artisanal miners. The victims were reportedly underground, searching for gold in the hazardous site, which had been previously closed due to serious safety concerns.

Residents recounted that the pit suddenly caved in, trapping an unknown number of miners. While some managed to escape, others were buried under the debris. This mine, known locally as Mabuka, was shut down last year by authorities following a spate of accidents attributed to unsafe mining practices. The Resident District Commissioner’s office had ordered its closure after numerous weekly incidents and an average of two monthly fatalities.

One local observer pointed to a severe lack of safety standards, noting that miners often work without essential protective gear like helmets and gloves. The site is also criticized for lacking clear safety protocols and effective oversight, leaving miners exposed to danger.

Concerns were also raised about the inadequate enforcement of mining regulations. “Whenever mines are closed, enforcement teams normally depart from the scene after 48 hours, prompting illicit individuals to continue mining without any clearance from authorities,” a resident explained, highlighting a recurring issue that puts illegal miners at constant risk.

Police have confirmed the incident. Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha stated that the bodies of the deceased, who are yet to be identified, have been moved to Buyinja Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examinations. One miner was rescued alive and is currently receiving medical attention at the same facility. Police fire and rescue services have initiated a search operation to determine if any other individuals remain trapped.

Investigations into the exact cause of the collapse are currently underway.
