NRM Officials Urge Defeated Flag Bearers to Support Official Candidates in LC1 Polls

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is calling on its members who did not secure the official party ticket for the upcoming Local Council One (LC1) chairperson elections to set aside their independent aspirations. Party officials have warned that such divisions could inadvertently benefit opposition parties.

State Minister for Kampala and MP for Nakaseke Central, Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye, emphasized the critical need for party unity in the July 28 village chairperson elections. He stated that internal conflicts could hand an advantage to other political forces.

Kyofatogabye made these remarks during a strategic meeting for NRM leaders in the Greater Luweero sub-region. The meeting, held at Luweero Guest House, gathered party officials from Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola districts to strategize for the elections.

It was noted during the meeting that several NRM members who lost the party’s endorsement have decided to run as independents. Some of these individuals are reportedly strong at the grassroots level, potentially challenging the officially endorsed candidates.

Despite this, Kyofatogabye reiterated that only candidates carrying the official NRM flag should receive the party’s full support. He explained that these official candidates are entrusted with implementing the NRM manifesto and monitoring key government programs like Emyooga and the Parish Development Model (PDM).

Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi, leading the NRM’s mobilization efforts in Greater Luweero, urged residents to vote for NRM candidates, highlighting the party’s delivery of essential government services and programs. He conveyed President Museveni’s directive for leaders to rebuild support and foster unity within the NRM in the region.

Mobilization meetings are set to commence, where village leaders will receive campaign materials and resources. Luweero District NRM Chairperson, Sam Buchanan, expressed strong confidence in the party’s performance, predicting an 85% victory based on adequate preparations.

Leaders at the meeting pledged to intensify mobilization efforts across the three districts to ensure NRM wins in both the LC1 chairperson and women representatives’ elections. The LC1 village chairperson elections are scheduled for July 28.
