Nabbanja Launches Emergency Food Aid for Karamoja Amidst Hunger Crisis

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has officially launched a critical food relief operation for the Karamoja region, where a severe hunger crisis has led to numerous deaths. The emergency intervention, a directive from President Yoweri Museveni, is set to provide sustenance to thousands of families over the next two months.

Reports from the region indicate that at least 19 individuals have succumbed to hunger, with local leaders highlighting the impact of a prolonged drought on food security. The government’s move comes as a swift response to these dire conditions.

During the flag-off ceremony, Prime Minister Nabbanja revealed that the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) contracted the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the UPDF, to supply the food. This decision was made after private suppliers quoted what she described as prohibitively high prices.

The relief program will distribute a total of 9 million kilograms of food across Karamoja’s nine districts. Nabbanja specified that each targeted household will receive 20 kilograms of maize flour and 10 kilograms of beans. Distribution will be expedited by delivering supplies directly to parishes, bypassing sub-county levels to reduce logistical hurdles.

Nabbanja has stressed the importance of accountability, directing district leaders to personally oversee the distribution and warning of severe consequences for anyone found to be diverting the relief supplies. “There will be no tolerance for the diversion of relief items. Anyone found responsible will be dealt with,” she stated.

While welcoming the immediate aid, ministers and local leaders also emphasized the need for long-term solutions. Suggestions include investing in irrigation, food storage facilities like silos, and climate-resilient agricultural practices to prevent future recurrences of such humanitarian crises. Some district officials have raised concerns that the current ration might be insufficient for the large family sizes common in Karamoja, potentially offering only short-term relief.

This relief effort is a critical step in addressing the immediate suffering in Karamoja, but the calls for sustainable development strategies are growing louder to ensure the region’s long-term food security.
