Museveni Sacks Six Engineers Over Road Project Corruption

Six engineers employed by the Ministry of Works and Transport have been fired by President Yoweri Museveni amid allegations of corruption linked to major infrastructure projects. The dismissals were revealed during a parliamentary committee meeting where Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, addressed queries from the Committee on Physical Infrastructure.

The affected officials, whose identities remain undisclosed, reportedly face accusations involving projects such as the Busega-Mpigi Expressway, the Mubende-Fort Portal road, and the Masaka-Mutukula road. Minister Wamala stated that the President’s directive was not to interdict but to immediately sack these engineers, indicating a strong stance against corruption.

This move comes as a response to concerns raised in the Auditor General’s report for the 2024/25 financial year, which highlighted delays and irregularities in various road construction projects across the country. The Busega-Mpigi Expressway, specifically, has been under scrutiny for issues including land valuation problems and funding mismanagement, despite receiving substantial funding from the African Development Bank.

Earlier this year, President Museveni had ordered a probe by the Inspectorate of Government into financial mismanagement on the Busega-Mpigi Expressway project. This directive led to the suspension of engineers Edwin Raymond Kiyaga, Dickens Ahimbishe, and Patrick Mulema pending investigations into alleged embezzlement of funds for the expressway and its associated access roads.

The Minister expressed his satisfaction with the President’s intervention, assuring the committee that the ministry would fully cooperate with investigative bodies and would not protect any officials implicated in corrupt practices. The revelation sent ripples of tension through the ministry officials present, with some reportedly seeking clarification on their positions.
