Mukono Bishop Urges MPs to Fund Cathedral Construction

The Most Rev. Enos Kitto Kagodo, Bishop of Mukono Diocese, has issued a strong appeal to Members of Parliament representing the Greater Mukono region, urging them to spearhead resource mobilization for the construction of the Diocesan Cathedral. Bishop Kagodo emphasized that this project presents a significant opportunity for both political leaders and the Christian community to contribute to building God’s house.

The call came during a courtesy visit by the MPs, who collectively reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the cathedral’s development. The delegation included legislators from Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe, and Buvuma districts and was led by Betty Nambooze Bakireke, the MP for Mukono Municipality.

During the meeting, Nambooze assured the Bishop of the MPs’ continued dedication to the cathedral project. She also took the opportunity to highlight pressing issues within their constituencies, including rising poverty levels, which she linked to trade restrictions impacting local businesses and household incomes. Nambooze advocated for the Church to bolster income-generating initiatives and consider allocating land for markets to foster economic activity.

Bishop Kagodo congratulated the newly elected MPs, reminding them of the divine calling of leadership and the importance of serving with humility, integrity, and justice, referencing Micah 6:9. He encouraged them to understand their constituents’ challenges and pursue practical solutions.

Further concerns were raised by the Bishop regarding the declining enrollment of girls in schools, a trend he attributed to early marriages, and the alarming increase in road accidents, particularly those involving children. He urged MPs to advocate for stronger measures to protect the girl child’s education and rights, enforce traffic laws rigorously, and address the encroachment on Church land, which jeopardizes facilities for education and community use.

Several MPs present made financial pledges towards the construction, collectively contributing a significant sum. The meeting concluded with prayers and blessings for the legislators, fostering a renewed collaborative spirit between the Mukono Diocese and its parliamentary representatives for the betterment of the Greater Mukono region.
