LC1 Election Officials Warn Candidates Against Malpractice

Candidates vying for Local Council One (LC1) chairperson and village women committee roles in Uganda’s Central North Region have been put on notice by election officials regarding electoral conduct. During a recent stakeholder engagement meeting involving local leaders and security agencies across six districts, officials stressed the importance of peaceful campaigns and adherence to electoral laws.

Anthony Okello, Electoral Commission Commissioner for the region, reminded candidates that they will continue to be neighbours after the elections and therefore should refrain from actions that could divide their communities. He emphasized strict adherence to electoral guidelines throughout the campaign period.

Tolbert Musinguzi, the Regional Election Officer, specifically cautioned against processions, campaign vehicles, insults, and voter bribery. He noted that current campaign rules permit only door-to-door engagements. Violators risk disqualification from the race.

Musinguzi also announced the introduction of voter identification tokens to enhance transparency and minimize fraud during polling and vote counting. Security agencies, represented by Luweero Resident District Commissioner Mariam Nalubega, have assured the public of their readiness to maintain law and order throughout the electoral process.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the number of independent candidates, many reportedly aligned with the ruling NRM party, potentially splitting votes. Efforts are reportedly underway to encourage some independents to withdraw in favour of official party candidates.

Campaigns began recently, with a strong emphasis from the Electoral Commission on issue-based and peaceful interactions as polling day approaches. These elections are crucial for local governance and community development.
