Bus Crash in Soroti: Three Injured After Swerving to Avoid Pedestrian

Tragedy struck at Opuyo trading centre in Soroti city on Sunday morning when a Kakise passenger bus veered off the road and collided with a bridge. The incident occurred around midnight as the bus, with registration number UAS 159P, was en route from Soroti to the capital, Kampala.

Eyewitnesses reported that a chaotic scene unfolded just before the crash, involving a group of people engaged in a fight near the road. The situation escalated when an individual reportedly ran into the path of the oncoming bus in an attempt to evade his pursuers.

Isaac Olinga, an eyewitness, recounted the dramatic moments. “The accident happened in front of many people here,” he stated. “We may not blame the driver; he was trying to avoid hitting a man who was being chased and attempted to cross the road.”

The bus driver, identified as Alfred Ekongo, attempted to swerve to avoid the pedestrian but lost control of the vehicle. The bus subsequently crashed into the bridge, causing significant damage.

Driver Ekongo, along with two other passengers, sustained serious injuries in the collision. They were promptly transported to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital to receive medical attention. Police have since towed the bus wreckage to Soroti Central Police Station and have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
