Buganda Kingdom Seeks United Front to Revitalize Kabaka's Lake

Buganda Kingdom is spearheading a campaign to restore Kabaka’s Lake, a vital cultural and tourist landmark in Ndeeba, appealing for collective action from surrounding communities. Dr. Anthony Wamala, the Kingdom’s Minister for Heritage and Culture, emphasized the urgent need to protect the lake from further degradation.

“We appeal to all residents around Kabaka’s Lake to keep it clean. Many people continue to dump waste into the lake, yet it is a treasured cultural and tourism site that belongs to all of us,” stated Dr. Wamala during a recent clean-up event. He highlighted that pollution from areas like Katanja, due to inadequate waste traps in drainage channels, directly contributes to the lake’s decline.

Encroachment is another significant issue, with some individuals claiming parts of the lake’s shoreline and using areas for livestock grazing. Dr. Wamala assured that the Kingdom is pursuing legal avenues to reclaim and safeguard these encroached lands. “Some people have taken over parts of the lake’s land, but we are pursuing the appropriate measures to ensure the Kingdom regains and safeguards this property,” he added.

Traditional healers and herbalists, led by Ssaabakabona Jjumba Lubowa Aligaweesa, have pledged their support for the restoration initiative. “Considering the significance of Kabaka’s Lake in our cultural heritage, we cannot sit back while it deteriorates. We are committed to supporting its restoration,” Aligaweesa declared.

Volunteers have been engaged in clean-up drives, removing accumulated garbage. Plans are also in motion to dredge silt and construct a protective fence to prevent further encroachment. The “Save Kabaka’s Lake” campaign, led by Chairperson Ahmed Lumu Yusuf, vows to continue until the lake is fully restored to its former glory.

The Kingdom is inviting individuals, companies, and organizations to join this crucial effort to preserve this significant historical landmark. This initiative is a testament to Buganda’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage for future generations.
