Namayanja Calls for NRM Unity Ahead of Village Elections, Cites Internal Divisions as Biggest Threat

Rose Namayanja, the Deputy Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has called upon party leaders and members to set aside their internal disputes. Speaking to NRM leaders in the Greater Masaka sub-region, Namayanja emphasized that internal wrangling, rather than political opposition, is the primary challenge facing the ruling party.

Namayanja stated that divisions among party members significantly undermine their collective strength. She pointed to the 2021 elections, suggesting that internal actions and failure to accept primary results contributed to losses, as voters often perceive independents as part of the NRM, and their combined votes could have secured victories in some areas.

Her visit to Masaka is part of a broader campaign to mobilize grassroots support and strengthen party structures in preparation for the forthcoming Local Council I (LC I) chairperson and village women’s committee elections. The meetings aim to identify and address challenges at the local level.

During the gathering, NRM leaders raised concerns about the irregular distribution of party flags and alleged unfair allocation of parliamentary committee positions, which they believe have sidelined the Greater Masaka region. Namayanja responded by warning officials against arbitrarily withdrawing endorsements from duly elected candidates.

She reiterated that no individual has the authority to revoke a party flag from a legitimately chosen candidate. Furthermore, she cautioned members against supporting independents or those from rival parties, as such actions erode the NRM’s electoral potential. Namayanja concluded by stressing that unity and the peaceful resolution of differences are crucial for securing victory in the upcoming elections.
