Warnings Allegedly Ignored Before Deadly School Bus Crash in Kapchorwa

The remnants of the Liberty Bus lie scattered along the treacherous Chepkwatit slope, a grim testament to a devastating road crash involving pupils from King David Junior School. School bags, books, and personal belongings are strewn across the scene, marking the spot where the bus, en route from an educational tour at Sipi Falls, veered off course.

Tragically, at least 21 pupils and two adults have been confirmed dead, with many more critically injured being treated at Kapchorwa Hospital and beyond. Survivors and local residents have added chilling details, suggesting the crash was not entirely unforeseen.

Accounts from witnesses indicate the bus experienced mechanical problems earlier in its journey, requiring several stops. Despite these issues, the vehicle proceeded towards the notoriously steep Chepkwatit slope. Locals, familiar with the dangers of this stretch of the Kapchorwa-Mbale road, reportedly warned the driver against continuing, citing the bus’s unsuitability for the descent.

“The bus had been stopping several times because of mechanical problems. When it reached this slope, residents warned the driver not to continue because the vehicle was not safe for such a dangerous descent,” one eyewitness, a boda boda rider, recounted. Concerns were also raised about the bus’s apparent age and condition, with visible wear on its tires a cause for concern.

Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the accident’s cause, examining the vehicle’s mechanical state, the driver’s decisions, and other potential contributing factors. The Chepkwatit slope has a history of fatal accidents, and the community is calling for improved road safety measures, including better signage and infrastructure, as well as stricter regulations for school transportation.
