Mityana Residents Raise Alarm Over Flawed Voters' Register Ahead of LC I Elections

Preparations for the crucial Local Council I (LC I) elections are underway across Uganda, but a significant roadblock has emerged in Mityana Municipality. Residents of Nakanyeenya-Ttanda Village in Ttamu Division have appealed directly to the Electoral Commission, demanding an immediate rectification of alleged discrepancies within the village’s voters’ register.

The core of the grievance lies in what constituents describe as a flawed document. Many eligible voters report discovering that their names are entirely absent from the register, while conversely, individuals who have moved away from the village years ago are still listed as active voters.

Further complicating matters, residents accuse the incumbent LC I Chairperson, John Marry Muganzi, and his wife of disregarding the official register provided by the Electoral Commission. Instead, they allegedly utilized a separate, unverified list, sowing seeds of confusion and distrust among the electorate.

“Many genuine voters cannot find their names, while people who no longer live here are still listed. This could deny residents their constitutional right to vote,” stated Lilian Namubiru, a concerned village resident. The fear of disenfranchisement is palpable, with many worried that genuine voters might be turned away on polling day.

Residents also voiced concerns about potential clashes with security personnel, should voters be erroneously denied their chance to participate. “If the register is not corrected in time, many innocent residents may be accused of causing chaos simply because their names are missing,” added Tumwekwase Robert, another resident.

Attempts by the local media to get clarity from an Electoral Commission official at the scene were met with apprehension. The official reportedly removed the register from public view and declined to comment when the press approached.

When reached, LC I Chairperson John Mary Muganzi stated he was not yet in the area of the reported confusion and could not immediately address the accusations.

The Electoral Commission has not yet released an official statement regarding these pressing concerns as the election timeline continues to advance.
