Magnitude 7.3 Earthquake Strikes Off Mexico Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued

A significant earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, struck off the coast of southern Mexico on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which occurred near the fishing town of Puerto Madero at a depth of 15.2 km, triggered immediate tsunami warnings for coastal areas of Mexico and Guatemala.

Authorities in Mexico have reported no fatalities or significant damage. Admiral Raymundo Morales, Mexico’s navy secretary, stated at a press conference that there was “no serious impact,” although residents were advised to stay clear of beaches as a precautionary measure.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for “hazardous tsunami waves” along nearby coasts. While small waves of approximately 0.3 meters (1.1 feet) above tide level were recorded in Puerto Madero and Chiapas, the threat has since passed, though vigilance is still advised near coastal waters.

Governors of the affected Mexican states, Oaxaca and Chiapas, confirmed that the quake was felt with “moderate intensity” and reported no substantial damage. In Guatemala and El Salvador, the tremor caused buildings to shake, leading to some evacuations as people left their homes.

A series of aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 4.7 to 6, followed the main earthquake. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had forecast waves of less than 0.3m for several other Central and South American countries, including El Salvador, Colombia, and Peru.

Despite the potential dangers associated with tsunamis, including drowning and being swept out to sea, the immediate impact from this event appears to have been minimal, with authorities urging continued caution and adherence to local guidance.
