Lake George Residents Demand Action on Rising Crocodile Attacks

Residents inhabiting the shores of Lake George in Kitagwenda District are facing significant safety concerns due to a disturbing rise in crocodile attacks. The communities, heavily reliant on the lake for fishing, have voiced their distress and desperation for swift action from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

During a recent community engagement meeting, locals shared harrowing accounts of how these attacks have become increasingly frequent, claiming several lives over the past two years. This has instilled a pervasive sense of fear, making daily life and economic activities precarious. “We are living in constant uncertainty,” lamented one resident, “Fishing is our main source of income, but every time people go onto the lake, they are unsure whether they will return safely.”

Robert Mugabe, the Member of Parliament for Kitagwenda County, echoed these sentiments, urging UWA to prioritize the safety of his constituents. He stressed that the authority has a responsibility to ensure that these communities can sustain themselves without the constant threat of wildlife.

Mike Birungi, Assistant Human-Wildlife Conflict Officer for the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, acknowledged the reports and assured attendees that UWA is preparing a response. He stated that a technical team is finalizing preparations to capture and relocate the problematic crocodiles that are posing a significant threat.

“Our technical team is making the necessary preparations, and we shall soon deploy officers to capture and relocate the crocodiles posing a threat to residents,” Birungi confirmed. The operation aims to enhance safety for those living and working by the lake and to foster better human-wildlife coexistence. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and to continue reporting all incidents.

The planned intervention has been welcomed by the residents, who hope it will help restore normalcy and confidence in their ability to depend on Lake George for their livelihoods.
