John Baptist Nambeshe Steps Up as Acting President of NUP

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced John Baptist Nambeshe as its new acting president. This appointment was confirmed by NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, who expressed confidence in Nambeshe’s ability to lead.

Nambeshe, who currently serves as the NUP’s Deputy President for the Eastern Uganda region, will take over from Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru. Bobi Wine thanked Dr. Zedriga for her steady leadership during her four-month tenure, stating that she had successfully kept the party focused.

“As her tenure comes to an end, I am pleased to announce that Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe… will be taking over as acting President of the National Unity Platform. I wish him well and request all leaders and comrades to accord him the necessary support,” Kyagulanyi stated.

Nambeshe’s political journey began in local government before he transitioned to national politics. He was elected as the LCIII chairperson of Bududa Town Council in 2006 and later became the LC5 chairperson of Bududa District in 2011. His entry into Parliament was in 2016 when he won the Manjiya County seat as a member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

However, Nambeshe’s alignment shifted when he joined the National Unity Platform in 2020, citing opposition to the removal of the presidential age limit as a key factor. After retaining his seat in the 2021 elections on the NUP ticket, he was appointed Opposition Chief Whip. His role has since expanded within the party, culminating in this acting presidency.

This is not Nambeshe’s first experience in an acting leadership capacity for NUP; he previously held the position during Bobi Wine’s international engagements in 2021. His current appointment comes as Bobi Wine is abroad following the January 2026 presidential election.
