Global South Bishops Learn Servant Leadership and Delegation Skills in Uganda

Bishops of the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches (GSFA) have been encouraged to embrace servant leadership, practice effective delegation, and enhance accountability. These principles are seen as crucial for maintaining healthy and productive episcopal ministries.

Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu of the Church of Uganda delivered these remarks at the Lweza Training and Conference Centre during the GSFA Bishops’ Formation Retreat. He acknowledged the immense expectations placed upon bishops, noting that they are often looked to for solutions to every problem.

However, Archbishop Kaziimba stressed that true leadership involves empowering others rather than bearing all responsibilities alone. He advised the bishops to delegate by providing clear guidance, setting appropriate boundaries, offering training and support, and establishing monitoring systems.

“Delegation is a biblical principle that enables leaders to focus on their primary calling while developing the gifts and capacities of others within the Church,” Archbishop Kaziimba stated. He reminded the bishops to remain focused on their divine mandate, drawing a parallel from Galatians 1:10, and to avoid trying to please everyone.

The retreat, themed “Rooted in Christ, Renewing the Church, Reaching the Nations,” is bringing together bishops and their spouses from various African provinces and Ghana. The program, running until July 20, 2026, includes sessions on practical and spiritual leadership, retirement planning, and aspects relevant to clergy spouses.

Archbishop Kaziimba highlighted that Uganda’s consistent hosting of these retreats reflects the GSFA’s confidence in the Church of Uganda’s commitment to biblical truth and the government’s supportive visa facilitation. The formation program aims to equip bishops for sustainable and effective ministry by grounding them in strong spiritual foundations and practical leadership skills.
