General (Rtd) Moses Ali: A Tribute to a Soldier, Statesman, and Historian

Uganda has lost a titan in General (Rtd) Moses Ali, whose remarkable life trajectory took him from humble beginnings in Adjumani to the highest echelons of national leadership. Ali’s career, spanning over five decades, mirrored Uganda’s own complex and transformative history, positioning him as a soldier, statesman, author, farmer, and community leader.

Born in 1939, Ali’s early years were marked by hardship. Orphaned at the age of 11, his education was sustained by his uncle and his own determination, often working in gardens to fund his schooling. These formative experiences instilled in him the values of perseverance and self-reliance that would characterize his public service.

His path into national prominence began in the military. Joining the Uganda Army, he rose through the ranks, becoming a commissioned officer and eventually holding significant command positions. His military career coincided with a turbulent period in Uganda’s history, where he served alongside a generation of officers who played key roles in shaping the nation.

Transitioning from military service, General Ali dedicated himself to politics. He served as Second Deputy Prime Minister and was a long-standing Member of Parliament for Adjumani West. His tenure in government was marked by a calm demeanor, a focus on dialogue, and a commitment to national unity. He was deeply respected by the people of West Nile, who saw him as a prominent son and advocate.

Beyond his political and military roles, General Ali was passionate about safeguarding history. In 2024, he launched his book, “The Odyssey of the Nubi,” documenting the history of the Nubian community in Uganda, and advocating for the establishment of a Nubian Heritage and Cultural Centre. This endeavor fulfilled his long-held ambition to leave a written record of his life and the experiences of his community for future generations.

General Ali also pursued business and farming, establishing Esia Mixed Farm and investing in modern ranching. His contributions extended to his local community in Adjumani, where he supported local initiatives, schools, and families. He often emphasized education as a vital investment for the youth.

General (Rtd) Moses Ali passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and historical preservation. Tributes have poured in from across the political and military spectrums, recognizing his enduring impact on Uganda’s peace, unity, and development.
