The High Court has scheduled July 24, 2026, as the date for the hearing of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s bail application. Lukwago is currently incarcerated in Luzira Upper Prison following his committal to the High Court earlier this week on charges of misprision of treason. A production warrant, issued on July 16, 2026, directs the officer-in-charge of Luzira Prison to ensure Lukwago appears before Justice David Matovu at 10:00 AM.
In his bail application, Lukwago, through his legal representatives, invokes constitutional rights to liberty and bail, asserting he meets all legal prerequisites for release. He highlights his standing as an advocate, former Lord Mayor, and former Member of Parliament, emphasizing his presumption of innocence and a fixed place of residence in Kampala, which he argues makes him unlikely to abscond.
Lukwago’s application also underscores his deteriorating health, citing chronic conditions such as hypertension, gastritis, spinal complications, and respiratory ailments that require specialized medical care unavailable in prison. He contends that his age and current health status make continued detention particularly burdensome. His legal team argues that the prison environment cannot adequately provide the necessary medical treatment, potentially leading to grave and irreparable harm.
Supporting his application, Lukwago has named four proposed sureties, including prominent political figures and personal associates. He maintains he has no intention of evading his legal responsibilities or family duties and is motivated to attend trial to clear his name. Lukwago was committed to the High Court after the prosecution indicated that investigations into the alleged failure to report a treasonous meeting in Nairobi were complete.
