Uganda Halts All School Trips Following Tragic Accidents

The Ministry of Education and Sports has issued an immediate and indefinite suspension on all school trips and educational excursions across Uganda. This directive follows a series of tragic road accidents that have claimed the lives of young learners.

Acting Minister of Education and Sports, Dr. John Muyingo, announced the precautionary measure on Friday. He stated that the suspension will remain in effect while the Ministry conducts a thorough review of existing safety guidelines for school travel and implements enhanced protective measures.

The tragic King David Junior School bus crash in Kapchorwa, which resulted in the deaths of 20 pupils and one adult, alongside numerous injuries, was a significant catalyst for this decision. Dr. Muyingo expressed deep sorrow for the victims and their families, extending condolences and wishes for a swift recovery to those injured.

The government emphasizes that the safety and well-being of students are paramount, and educational activities should never endanger their lives. While acknowledging the educational value of such trips, the ministry insists that safety must be the unwavering priority.

In response, the Permanent Secretary has been tasked with an urgent review of current regulations and proposing additional safety protocols. Schools are reminded of their responsibility to adhere strictly to safety requirements, including ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, licensed, and fit for purpose. Furthermore, only qualified and licensed drivers with strong safety records should be employed, with risk assessments, parental notification, and adequate supervision being mandatory.

The Ministry plans to collaborate with the Uganda Police Force, Ministry of Works and Transport, and other relevant bodies to investigate past incidents and develop preventative strategies. School proprietors, administrators, transport providers, and parents are urged to prioritize student safety and ensure full compliance with all safety regulations.

This suspension highlights growing concerns over the safety of school transportation in Uganda, particularly in light of recent accidents during educational tours and school-related travel.
