Fears over student safety on Uganda’s roads have been amplified following another serious school bus accident. A coaster bus transporting students from Nalango collided with a sugarcane truck near Busota Health Centre III in Kamuli District.

Authorities reported that the crash inflicted severe injuries on several students, including fractures, with some sustaining critical conditions. The Kamuli District Emergency Medical Services (EMS) rescue team swiftly responded, transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities. Medical officials confirmed that emergency and medical wards were inundated with casualties, with clinical teams working urgently to stabilize patients.

The exact number of students injured in the incident remained unconfirmed at the time of reporting. This latest accident occurred less than 24 hours after a devastating crash in Kapchorwa District, where 20 pupils lost their lives returning from a study tour. The Kapchorwa tragedy, along with recent school transport incidents in Mukono and Bugweri, has intensified calls for improved road safety measures concerning school transportation.

In response to the spate of accidents, the government has indefinitely suspended all school study tours nationwide. Schools undertaking educational trips were instructed to report to the nearest police station for guidance. The Ministries of Education and Sports, and Works and Transport, in conjunction with the Uganda Police Force, are reportedly collaborating on new regulations for school transport and trips. The cause of the Kamuli crash is still under investigation by the police.

Emergency responders urged the public to facilitate the passage of ambulances and avoid hindering rescue operations at accident scenes.
